DEFINITION

Signs are warning of hazards; temporarily or permanently affixed or placed at location where hazard exist.

All traffic control signs or devices used for protection of construction workmen shall confirm to American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

PURPOSE OF SAFETY SIGN

Why use safety signs?

·         They keep us safe

·         They save us time

·         They keep others safe

·         They keep us out of trouble

·         They help the society find order

IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY SIGNS

·         Safety signs and signals are one of the main means of communicating health and safety information

·         This includes the of illuminated signs, hand and acoustic signals (e.g fire alarms) spoken communication and the marking of pipe work containing dangerous substances

·         Traditional sign boards, such as prohibition and warning signs, signs for fire exists, Fire action plans notices ( fire drills) and fire-fighting equipment are also considered to be safety signs.

·         In view of their importance, it is critical that all safety signs and signals can be easily understood

HEALTH AND SAFETY(SAFETY SIGNS AND SIGNALS) REGULATIONS 1996

These regulations require employers to provide specific safety signs whenever there is a risk that has not been avoided or controlled by other means, e.g by engineering controls and safe system of work.
